Environmental Initiatives
EJM appreciates the vital
role that business aviation and general aviation play in our clients’ lives and businesses. We also recognize that aviation has an impact on the environment, and are committed to minimizing that impact. As the leader in private aviation, EJM works diligently with clients, vendors, and business partners to be responsible stewards of our natural resources and reduce the impact of our activities in the air and on the ground.

In the Air

Carbon Offsets

  • EJM has participated in the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EUETS) since 2009 and has been offsetting our EU carbon emissions since January 1, 2012. The EUETS program enables the greenhouse gases emitted during the flight to be offset by investing in projects that remove the equivalent amount of greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.
  • EJM is an active participant in CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation), which is recognized as the first global scheme to cover the entire aviation industry, By 2050, CORSIA plans reduce aviation net CO2 emissions to half of 2005 levels. With CORSIA in place, carbon offset credits will be able to be purchased from a single source.
  • EJM adheres to these important CORSIA implementation phases:
  1. All participating operators will have to report all international flights from January 1, 2019 through 2020: including to and from exempted states (No offsetting is required during this phase.)
  2. 2021–2023: Only those flights that are between states who volunteer to participate will be subject to monitoring, reporting, and verification requirements.
  3. 2024–2026: Only those flights that are between states who volunteer to participate will be subject to monitoring, reporting, verification, and offsetting requirements.
  4. 2027 – Beyond: Mandatory; All international flights will be subject to offsetting except for small islands and less developed countries.

Emissions Reduction

  • EJM actively participates in flight delay reduction programs (CDM) and FAA NextGen initiatives to reduce emissions produced by Air Traffic Control (ATC) delays. To date, these programs have reduced the average ATC delay by 75%.
  • EJM has been an ongoing participant in aircraft performance studies to minimize fuel burn across a wide variety of aircraft types and turbojet engines.

Noise Reduction

  • To minimize the impact on the Teterboro (TEB) and Westchester County (HPN) airports and the surrounding communities, EJM has implemented a Voluntary Restraint From Flying (VRFF) program to curtail airplane noise during overnight hours.
  • Similarly, EJM received a “Good” rating out of the possible “Good,” “Satisfactory,” or “Poor” ratings in the Aspen/Pitken County Airport Fly Quiet Program.

On the Ground

Carbon Offsets

  • The carbon footprints of our facilities are offset through the NetJets Carbon Offset Program.

Recycling

  • EJM has active recycling programs at our Cincinnati, OH and White Plains, NY facilities, recycling more than 10 tons per year.

Energy Efficiency

An environmental impact assessment at our Cincinnati, OH and White Plains, NY facilities resulted in:

  • Replacing all hangar lights with more efficient models, dramatically reducing energy usage and heat load.
  • In Cincinnati, we realized a Carbon Dioxide (CO2) reduction of 306,000 lbs. per year, and a Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) reduction of 2,000 lbs. per year.
  • In White Plains, we realized a CO2 reduction of 60,200 lbs. per year, and a SO2  reduction of 241 lbs. per year.
  • Installing hangar fans at our White Plains facility reduced the energy required to heat the facility by 26%. The estimated environmental impact is an annual reduction of 11,000 gallons of heating oil, 270,000 lbs. of CO2, 740 lbs. of Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), and 1,800 lbs. of SO2.

EJM is pleased with the successes we have achieved to date and the progress we are making toward ever greater efficiencies in our operations. While pleased, we are not satisfied, and we will continue to search and implement new methods that will yield increasingly greater results.
